Stay away from your teacher!

Why some people can’t learn a foreign language? The easiest explanation is “they are learning disabled “. But it can be true only in some cases. Sometimes it happens that somebody already speaks two languages, but he can’t manage to learn the third one. Maybe he’s got to choose another method, or he’s chosen the wrong teacher. Maybe he doesn’t really realize that it’s all about his own inner resistance. In this article we are going to discuss these problems and some interesting solutions.

 One of the reasons of learning failure is that students are traditionally taught as if they were going to become linguists, giving them too many peculiarities, which are actually more important for professional linguists than such for a student. Meanwhile, according to surveys carried out 76% of people learning a foreign language need it for using on a daily basis only – for communication, correspondence, reading, etc. It is time to divide users and linguists.

Another reason is that learning disability. Once again, according to surveys carried out only 6% of people has ability to learn foreign languages. Those people can easily learn ay foreign language and speak it fluently with no accent at all. It’s all about personal qualities, even the actor talent. However, if your purpose is to speak it (clear enough) and understand – you can do it alright. All you need is to find a proper method. There we face a problem. Sometimes a method chosen by your teacher wouldn’t merely agree with you. For example, psychologists claim that communicative methods and so called immersion courses are contra-indicated for a melancholic person. It is better for them to learn a language quietly avoiding stresses. The proper method can be selected according to the psychological testing.

According to the results of such psychological testing specialists will form psychological portrait of a person and give him certain recommendations to respect when choosing a learning method. It will also help to discover hidden problem with learning foreign languages a person might not know about before. The core difficulties may be actually beyond the linguistic ground. Somebody learn a language because he has nothing else to do in the spare time, others are bound with it because their future profession requires it while they have no will or wish to learn it. Somebody may not fully realize how much time and efforts it actually takes to study a foreign language. A person, of course, resists it. However, language learning requires your active cooperation.

Good results can be achieved by distant individual learning, when cassettes with getting gradually more complicated expressions in a foreign language are being reordered for you (with translation, but the language alternation is thoroughly calculated) according to your personal qualities and mental abilities. You listen to them routinely and then meet your teacher for corrections. Every time you meet your teacher has to evaluate your progress and correct the course.

Distant learning doesn’t bind a person to any strict schedule; it doesn’t require your permanent presence in any particular place. Instead, regular meetings with a teacher and a group only increase your motivation. There are 3-4 people in such a group that gather together to practice a language they learn by themselves. A teacher only observes and helps people in the group. Such a system is very effective. Students gain self-confidence, understand what others are telling them, can put words together and compound a sentence at once instead of translating it from their native language first.
